religious books, which were given me to
read between the hours of service I could
not understand, and therefore I read
them with no attention whatever, and
merely as a task. I learned the collects
and occasionally read the Psalms to my
mother; and repeated some prayers when
I went to bed. All this was done me-
chanically, and my dear parents thought
they were thus fulfilling their duty in
instructing me in religion. Unfortunately
I was never made to feel religion - never
properly instructed in the nature of
it; and therefore I knew nothing of
its influence. I continued to receive
a very unfortunatel and ruinous edu-
cation till I was 12 years of age, when
I went to the house of an Aunt at Derby
where I resided for 14 months, and
had the advantage of a few masters;
but I never went to school. After my

Register.
