return home to my family, and when I
was about 14 years of age, I lost my dear
mother.
In these years I had experienced
several great mercies, but I was uncon-
scious of them as such, and therefore
felt no thankfulness. Twice in my
early youth, when about 6 and 13, I
was mercifully preserved from falling
a victim to the wickedness of [?]
Once I was preserved from being burnt
to death, when about 3 years of age,
my clothes being inflames.
As I advanced in years, I began
to read with attention, and to reflect
on what I read. Unhappily for me
my reading had been [?] novels
and other idle books. But on Sundays
I read the Bible, and I now read it
with attention - yet as I had no guide,
I interpreted it my own way, and had
not the most distant idea that my
opinions were different from those of
my father. Accident [?] that
