a very pious and a very learned man.
He had an extensive knowledge of Hebrew
and of the oriental languages; and he
devoted his liesure  leisure time to religious
studies, and particularly occupeid  occupied
himself in writing illustrations of
the Scriptures from oriental customs.
His devotedness to this work rendered
him unfit for the office of teacher
in his family. At least he failed to
instruct my heart in the truths of
religion.In consequence of this and
my dear Mother's extreme ill health,
I was much neglected in my childhood.
Indeed I received very little instruction
of any kind.I learned the church
catechism, and said it in the parish
church on Sundays. The poor chil-
dren repeated it better than I did,
but I thought much more of my su-
periority in dress, than of my inferiority
