John Sparks who departed to our Saviour the 8th of Septem
ber 1769 at HaverfordWest in Pembrokeshire
He was born the 3rd of December 1726 in the Parish of Saint Martins
and edcuated in the Principles of the Presbyterians. He was kept stricktly
to school in his youth, and at first entended to become a minester of the
gospel to which he had the most Inclination. Mean time he assisted
his Father who was a wealthy Merchant in his Busness. The First time
that he perceived a concern for his salvation, was in the year 1737 when
he heart Mr Howel Harris preach. At the time of the great awakening
in these Parts, His zeal would not suffer him to keep Silence, but
notwithstanding his youth, he bore his Testimony in Publick with the
other Methodist Preachers, which was not without good Efffect, and gain'd
him the Love of his hearers. In the Year 1742 he began to expound
the Scripture, and preach'd publickly in his Fathers House, who was a
very religious man. When another preachd, and he was a hearer, he generally compased a few verses during the Meeting; and sung it, at
the Conclusion of the Sermon. Sometime after, he gave out a small
collection of Hymns of his own composing, of which we will insert
a few Verses which will show what his thoughts was at that time
In one of his Hymns he says:
You that the Lords Embassadours are still'd,
call call aloud, the Lord hath us redeemed;
call unto each poor sinner that you see,
Bid him for Peace & rest to Jesus flee.
