not as we could have wish'd; notwithstanding which his whole Life and
more particular his last Illness evidently gave agreeable proofs of
his acquaintance with our Saviour. After his decease the following
lines of his own writing was found in his Tablets which he wrote
the 12 of September 1760 on the decease of his son Ludwig
"our dear Lords Embrace cause us to blush with shame & bowedness
so that all expression fails, yet he that proveth the Heart knows
that our Hearts and Minds cleave to him our Life. His Kindness
affects heart and soul, his faithfulness without end He is our
creator, redeemer, and Bridegroom, yea our Father oh what sweet
Names! Whosoever understands and feels the blessings there in con-
tain'd can scarce remain in the Body; particularly such a poor
Heart as I am. It is my greatest concern that I do not make a
right use of these blessings. By heart wish is that I to
Jesus dear, my bridegroom, wonderfully fair, may ever prove a
Consort." The 23 of September 1761 He writes, "It would be my
greatest consolation at my Discease, to know that my Children place
all their Trust and Confidence in our Saviour. That his sweet
-ness and his Peace, is their only Happiness, for out of him neither
Peace not rest is to be found. For the rest, I hope that so as the
faithful Heart of Jesus has continually loved and overstream'd me
with his Benifits; he will likewise act in the same Manner
towards my children. If they love him above all things in the
world, they will never want any good thing."
Some months ago signs of a consumption apeard which in-
creas'd very fast. In his last Illness he was often much concern'd
and his expression concerning his wretchedness and unfaithful-
ness was often distressful and heartmoving. Yet our dear Savr
consoled him with his sweet nearness, and gave him a new Assu-
rance of his grace. A few days before his departure, he spoke
with great emotion and many tears as follows: He is my
