The Life of Br Philip Meurer
Bethlehem April 15th 1760
He was born the 25th of March 1708 at Ingweiler
in Alsatia about half 3 Miles from Bucksweiler
was educated in the Lutheran Religion He wrights
of himself as follows:
I have have always so long as I can remem
ber stirring in my Heart but at one Time
more than another. In the year 24 I was put to 
my Oncle Georg Gross that not lives in HHut
to learn the Shoemaker Trade, he confinded me
& cut off all Opportunity of being seduced, which 
was well for me. Anno 27th I travelld to Stras
burg & ao 28 to Frankfurt on Mayn & work'd
there three Years. In this Place our Savr work
powerful on my Heart. I felt my lost conditi
on & unless a Change was wrough I cou'd not
be happy, this made me very uneasy & as I fair
would have Rest in my Heart I began to try mo
ny Ways, to live a pious & hontest Life, bought
me many good Books, went diligently to the
Church, cried and pray'd to God (for of our Savr


I had heard nothing, and that he must deliver 
the Heart from Evil & not we) but toward not Rest
in all these Things, Sinning & repenting was my
unhappy Condition for three long years. I resolv'd
in that year 31 to travel to Nurnberg with the
Design to stay there some weeks, from thence
to Regensburg & to Vienna & so to enjoy the World;
But our Dear Savr had other Thoughts, he
alter'd my Mind that I could not do as I would,
but my Desires continued still to find Happi
ness. In this Desire I went 32 to Regensburg,
& in the year 33 to Augsburg, where I came upon
A Fast Day & went into St Anns Church &
heard the Senior Urtsperger spreach on Es 28, 15
we have made a convenant with Death & with
Hell we are at agreement. In this Sermon
our Savr came near to my Heart, and I was 
much awaken'd, about 3 weeks after I receiv'd
Grace from our dear Savr was happy & felt
peace, but yet I was unacquainted with his
bleeding Figure. In the year 36 in October came
quit unexpected Br. Georg Schmidt, ( who had
been among the Hottentots) from Herrnhut
