<persname>Mary Elizabeth Thornton</persname> was born on the <date>16th of December 1831</date> in the little village of <placename>Tong</placename>. At the age of about four years she learned to read with great facility, and indeed began early to give indications of an ardent thirst for knowledge and intense delight in reading.
