<persname>Mary Elizabeth Thornton</persname>
was born on the <date>16th of December
1831</date> in the little village of <placename>Tong</placename>.
At the age of about four years she
learned to read with great facility,
and indeed began early to give indi-
cations of an ardent thirst for knowledge
and intense delight in reading.
